Electric drive for hybrid and electric vehicles
- High torque from a standstill
- Lower fuel consumption
- Higher efficiency thanks to optimum energy management
- Low emissions
- Costs and range can be optimized through optimum system design
- Growing infrastructure
The advantages of an electric drive for hybrid and electric cars are clear: torque from a standstill, higher efficiency, and fewer emissions than with combustion engines.
The challenges start with real-life use: How can the available installation space be used the most effectively? Can the drive components survive a rough environment and critical driving conditions? How can a low-priced electric drive be realized for series production? Which electric drive achieves an optimum battery range?
As development partners, the VECTOPOWER engineers find answers to these questions for you, using industry-proven drive technology and their extensive experience with electrical mobility applications as a basis.

Drive system for hybrid and electric drives: technology, advantages, and challenges
Compact drive system
The VECTOPOWER traction drive consists of two precisely coordinated components: the inverter and the electric motor.
The VECTOPOWER electric motors have a high power density and are precisely adapted to the available installation space in hybrid/electric cars. The following motor variants are available:
- PM synchronous motor with reluctance torque utilization
- High-efficiency asynchronous motor
The VECTOPOWER inverter offers an extremely high power density: It has an output of 250 kW with a volume of only 10 l. The high power density and the compact dimensions save space in the vehicle – which can be used for more batteries, for example. Furthermore, the VECTPOWER drive system reliably manages battery voltages up to 720 V DC. A 4-quadrant operation is also possible.
Higher battery range due to high efficiency
The VECTOPOWER e-drive takes advantage of interactions in the system to achieve a very high efficiency. This saves energy especially in the partial load operational range, which is important for consumption, for example, in stop-and-go traffic. The high efficiency allows greater ranges or the use of smaller and thus less expensive batteries.
Industry-proven drive components
VECTOPOWER inverters and electric motors come from manufacturers that are proven experts for electric drives. Together, these companies have delivered more than 200,000 components for use in aircraft, test benches, machine tools, etc.
All this experience can be seen in the VECTOPOWER electric drive and leads to a high industrial maturity of the product.
