Shaft generator for on-board power supply with reduced fuel consumption
The shaft generator is coupled to the ship’s propeller drive by means of a power-split, which makes the operation of a separate combustion engine redundant and reduces fuel consumption.
The challenge
Two challenges had to be overcome:
- The generation of electrical power at variable propeller speed
- Combining the generated on-board power supply with classic generators to cover all operating conditions.
The solution
The generator function of the VECTOPOWER inverter solves the problem of generat-ing a stable HV-DC voltage, even in a large speed range of the generator. And the local grid function of the VECTOPOWER inverter enables both the genera-tion of an independent electrical local grid and the synchronization to existing grids of gensets for a power boost.
